Employee Engagement - 4th Annual - 1st & 2nd February 2012

Has employee engagement ever been so important?                                                                                                                                                                                                                   Engaged employees care about the future of the company and are willing to invest the discretionary effort. Engaged employees feel a strong emotional bond to the organisation that employs them.

However, with the recent ratings downgrade of the US, the EU running around to avoid further bail outs and global stock markets making the headlines for the wrong reasons, employee engagement might just be the single most important area to focus on to give your business a competitive edge. Employee turnover is costly: once you’ve taken into account the direct expenses, including recruiters fees, training, new office setups and more, and factored in costs such as lost productivity, lost relationships (with clients, suppliers and industry networks), and also considered the impact of staff changes on culture and climate, staff turnover can cost anywhere from one to three times the cost of an employee’s annual salary.

“Gallup estimates that actively disengaged employees cost the German economy between 121.8 billion and 133.6 billion euros per year in lost productivity. The absenteeism rate among actively disengaged German employees is 28% greater than among engaged workers. The accumulated impact of this absenteeism can be overwhelming, considering that each day an employee is away from work in Germany costs companies an average of € 247.20 per worker.”

But it’s not just a financial cost. When you lose an employee, you lose their experience, skills, relationships and knowledge. It also impacts team dynamics and often the job satisfaction, engagement and stress levels of co-workers and other staff – especially if they have to pick up the slack when a colleague leaves.

This issue of a potential staff exodus is therefore going to put a huge strain on your organisation. What can you do to try and ensure it doesn’t happen to you?

You can’t control every reason why employees leave. Knowing why they leave, though, can help you change things so that you can do as much as you can to keep your employees happy, engaged and satisfied in their jobs. There are no silver bullets to ensure that this happens. But attending this conference you will get useful tips on how to avert a disaster.
